Scam attempts might increase

STAUNTON —  The phone calls started coming about a week ago for 79-year-old Louise Yevchinecz.

On the morning of Oct. 3, the Staunton resident was told she’d won $2 million and that the money would be delivered shortly. Six hours later, a man called to tell Yevchinecz that an agent with the United States Marshals Service had detained the courier, and that Yevchinecz would need to pay a $600 fee for the delivery to proceed. Yevchinecz wasn’t biting.
